Decisive Coaching Strategies, LLC (DCS LLC) has a full menu of services available to meet the needs of our clients. We are prepared to customize services based upon client needs. We work both inside and outside of healthcare.



Executive Coaching


What is coaching? Many people confuse coaching with therapy and/or advice giving. Some view coaching as a sign of weakness or incompetence. None of these is true. Coaching is a structured, results oriented relationship where the coach serves as a mirror for the client, feeding back what the client has not been able to see before. Just as the human eye cannot look at itself, neither can we as human beings look objectively at ourselves. The coach does not provide advice, but rather provides feedback in such a way that the client finds his/her own pathway to overcoming obstacles, achieving breakthroughs or solving what appeared to be an intractable issue.


You are a candidate for coaching if, for example, you are taking on something that is big and foreign to you, something that has been a problem for a long time or something that you do not know how to accomplish. We begin each coaching assignment with at least one in person conversation with our client, building the background of the relationship. Then, working with the clients, we establish an ongoing coaching relationship that may include weekly phone conversations as the main mode of interaction, with the coach coming on-site periodically as needed.



CEO Mentoring


Our mentoring services are distinct from coaching in that they include advice and counsel in the key roles and duties of the CEO and are especially useful for CEOs who are new in the role. We have served other members of the C-Suite as well key leadership Directors and Managers. Topical areas may include but are not limited to: communication and interaction with the Board of Directors, development of Board meeting agendas, Board nominating committee processes, community involvement of the CEO and staff, the role of the institution in the community, visibility in the organization, communication and relationship building with key stakeholders, pacing within the organization, running effective meetings and balancing work and personal lives. We will extend this service to other levels of healthcare executives at the request of the CEO.



Succession Planning Assistance


While succession planning for the CEO role is the responsibility of the Board of Directors, the accountability frequently falls to the CEO for carrying it out. We provide a structured process which identifies the leadership needs of the organization at the CEO level and also at the next several levels of management. As needs and time lines are established, an assessment of internal talent is undertaken and gaps in candidates’ capabilities are identified and addressed through structured development plans and/or the recruitment of external talent by search firms. We are available to facilitate the implementation of the development plans and mentoring services for internal succession candidates under the guidance of the CEO.



CEO Performance Review Process


The selection of the CEO is commonly believed to be one of the most important jobs of the Board of Directors. However, a meaningful performance review of that same CEO is lacking in most businesses today.

Through interviews with the Board leadership and the CEO, we will assist in the development of tools and processes designed to provide a meaningful review experience for both the CEO and the Board. Key customers of the organization will be identified and included in this process as well. The end product will not only include a look back on past performance but also a look forward, focusing on the alignment of organizational priorities and how the CEO’s performance will be measured. Key touch points during the course of the performance year will be built in to allow for mid-course corrections.



Governance Structure and Effectiveness Evaluation


Through interviews, review of Board documents and observations, we will work with the Board leadership and the CEO to facilitate a complete review of governance effectiveness. Job descriptions for individual Board Members and Committee Chairs will be developed through an interactive process with the CEO and the Board. Committees of the Board will be reviewed to look for gaps in oversite or duplication of effort. The By-laws and Board policies will be reviewed and recomendations made for institutional, Board leadership and legal counsel review.


Areas addressed regarding the Board(s) of Directors will include and will not be limited to: composition, structure, leadership development, succession planning and self-evaluation process and tools. In addition, job descriptions for Board officers, individual Board members and Committee Chairs will be reviewed and/or developed. The Board’s Committee structure and their effectiveness will be reviewed as well. We will address the importance of adequate support being provided by the organization to the Board, which may include educational and retreat offerings for individual Board members and the entire Board, and a Board specific website portal to facilitate the work of individual Board members.




Executive Team Membership “Fit” Assessment


This service is commonly used when a new CEO joins an organization, when it is clear that an executive team is not performing as optimally as possible or a new strategic direction requires different performance from the executive team. Through the use of interviews, observations and possibly testing, we will work with the CEO to assemble and/or enhance his/her executive team.



Organization-Wide Cultural Assessment and Transformation


We will support the organization’s leadership in assessing the current culture, describing what future cultural state is desired and developing an action plan and time line for closing the gap between the two. The measurement of progress in changing the culture is key to the success of the program. We will work with the client to develop monitoring tools.



Team Building/Coaching


Under the direction of the CEO, we will work with teams at any level of the organization. Our commitment is to facilitate the emergence of spectacular teams and outcomes. We will address relationships, spoken and unspoken ground rules, disciplines of the team, roles of individual team members and meeting effectiveness.




Mediation Services


Mediation is successful when the very parties that have been engaged in a dispute achieve a win/win outcome. We are prepared to serve as mediator and facilitate the creation of a solution that originates from the parties to the dispute and not from the facilitator. We do not serve as mediators in union wage and benefit negotiations.



Physician Leadership Coaching


We can provide coaching to physician leaders of the organized medical staff as well as physician executives on the organization’s payroll. We have had great success working with physicians in private practice who are not in leadership roles outside of their own practice.
